History - About WCA
The First Eight Decades

updated: July 9, 2008
Members Only

World War I brought an increasing number of women into professions and wage earning enterprises. The year 1920 marked the beginning of several national organizations of business and professional women. This same year, the Department of Women's Affairs of the Des Moines Chamber of Commerce was formed as the first of its kind in the United States. The Board of Directors of the General Chamber voted favorably for the creation of this new department on May 6, 1920. Three hundred eleven business and professional women were formally received into membership.

The eight women who formulated the plan adopted the following objectives:

  • Form an economic organization essentially conservative.
  • Educate women in economic values.
  • Establish bureaus by means of which women would have every opportunity of specializing in the fields in which they were particularly interested.
  • Inculcate right principles in the thoughts and practices of womankind, especially younger women.
  • Bring to the city the best thinkers and speakers on economic issues.
  • Collect and formulate data on all matters pertaining to the progress and welfare of women in the business world and in the professions.
  • Gather and distribute information relative to vocational opportunities.
  • Establish quarters where the business and professional women could meet other business and professional women for exchange of ideas and keep in touch with new developments in their particular lines of interest.

The WCA Presidents

Women's Chamber Alliance is what it is today because of the fantastic dedication and leadership from the past boards and presidents. Here is a listing starting with Georgia Quicly who was the first Women's Chamber Alliance president in 1943. We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation for the vision, dedication and time commitment of all of our current and past board members and presidents.
